"Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important."
Due to the Covid Pandemic all of our lessons are conducted online via Zoom for the student, their family and our safety. Whilst many are skeptical of online learning, it has become a new norm for our South African students.
We have designed our lessons in such a manner that they are best suited to the students and we conduct surveys often to determine what methods they prefer, are more effective and the easiest way to learn.
With lots of research into online learning I have discovered that there are many more advantages than it just being convenient and safer.
Online learning teaches students to be more responsible and disciplined towards their education. Since the students do not have a teacher constantly looking over their shoulder, assessing their progress or nagging for work to be completed; these responsibilities fall into the students hands, they become responsible for their progress and success. Which leads me to the next advantage; online learning adequately prepares students for the learning environment of university. Majority of South Africa's universities consist of lecture halls suitable for 400 to 700 students yet are seating 1500 students; the likelihood of a student getting individual attention in these circumstances is low, and studying becomes the responsibility of the student alone.
